EV Out of Charge on the Freeway

1. Coast right. Use remaining momentum to reach the right shoulder or an exit ramp, as far from live lanes as possible.
2. Hazards immediately. Then, if you have them and it is safe, place triangles or flares well behind the vehicle.
3. Stay inside, belted, doors locked. Standing outside on an LA freeway shoulder is the single most dangerous thing you can do.
4. Call 911 first if you are stuck in a live lane — CHP needs to protect the scene before any service vehicle arrives.
5. Then call (916) 826-9410 with your freeway, direction, and last exit passed.

Certain stretches generate a disproportionate share of our calls because there is nowhere to charge: the 134 through Burbank and Glendale, the 405 over the Sepulveda Pass, the 101 through the Cahuenga Pass, the 210 through the foothills, and the 5 north of Sylmar heading toward the Grapevine. If you enter any of these below 20%, exit and charge first.

Our technician positions the unit with hazards and cones, connects on the traffic-shielded side of your vehicle where possible, and runs a Level 2 session. On freeway calls we usually recommend Quick Boost — 30 minutes and roughly 30–40 miles — so you spend as little time on the shoulder as possible and can complete the charge somewhere safe.

Occasionally the correct answer is a flatbed — a mechanical fault, a blocked charge port, or a location we cannot safely work. In those cases we tell you straight and help coordinate an EV-appropriate flatbed with all wheels off the ground rather than a hook-and-chain tow that can damage the drivetrain.
